How it is calculated.
Official sources
The VAT rate.
21% is the general rate; 10% and 4% are the reduced rates of Spain’s VAT law (arts. 90 and 91). Use 0% for exempt or zero-rated sales: the invoice shows no VAT.
Adding VAT.
The VAT is the base times the rate, rounded to the cent. The total is the base plus the VAT.
Removing VAT.
We divide the price by 1 plus the rate (1.21 at 21%) and look for the base whose rounded VAT adds up to exactly that price. If none does, we show what the closest one adds up to.
The equivalence surcharge.
When you sell goods to a shop under the recargo de equivalencia, you add 5.2%, 1.4% or 0.5% on the same base, depending on the VAT rate (art. 161 of the VAT law).
IRPF withholding.
If you are a professional invoicing a business, your client withholds 15% of the base (7% in your first year and the two after) and pays it to the tax office, Hacienda, on your behalf. It comes off what you collect.

What people ask us most.
Divide the price by 1.21 if it includes 21% VAT, by 1.10 at 10% or by 1.04 at 4%. For example, €121 divided by 1.21 is a €100 base plus €21 of VAT.
21%, unless your activity has a reduced rate: 10% for hospitality, passenger transport or most food, and 4% for bread, milk, fruit, books or medicines. Some activities, such as healthcare or regulated education, are exempt.
No, from the base without VAT. On a €1,000 invoice plus €210 of VAT with 15% withholding, your client pays you €1,060 and pays the €150 withheld to Hacienda.
When you sell goods to a retailer who is a natural person or a joint ownership (comunidad de bienes) under that regime. The surcharge goes on the same invoice, separate from the VAT. It never applies to services or to sales to consumers.
Because the VAT is rounded to the cent. Some prices, such as €100 at 21%, have no base that adds up exactly: €82.64 gives €99.99 and €82.65 gives €100.01.
